Alpaca Ranch in DeFuniak Springs, Florida

Home

Sunkissed Alpaca Ranch is working ranch and we breed alpacas. Like most startup breeders, we located bred stock to purchase initially with bloodlines and/or breedings that would upgrade our stock from the first cria born here. As we now look at our next generation of females to breed them, we again look to finding compatible and superior genetics to make the next generation better.

Our herd is not yet large enough to breed “in-house”, so we search potential herdsires using the ARI database and nearby state breeder organizations. Some regional organizations have Herdsire Catalogs on their websites that can provide good screening information about a herdsire in terms of fiber quality and fleece color.

You can imagine after waiting for nearly a year for a cria that you would want that little one to be the best possible alpaca. Our philosophy of breeding is simple: Make each generation better than the one before it, breed for good health, improved fiber characteristics, and make the choices for matching females and males a scientific genetic decision.

Raising alpacas in the Florida climate brings challenges due to the heat and humidity conditions that can be tolerated by these unique animals. We can see temps near 90 degrees even in March, so we have planned our barn and shelter facilities to serve as a refuge from those conditions. We have pictures of our facilities to illustrate our solutions to heat and humidity related issues.
